The Lens: Issue 878

This month, we saw something unusual

The pictures of gedolim visiting one another to wish and be wished a gut yahr are fairly common, but this month, we saw something unusual. Rav Yaakov Meir Schechter, Breslov mashpia and rosh yeshivah of Shaar Hashamayim, went to visit the Ga’avad, Rav Yitzchok Tuvia Weiss, before Rosh Hashanah, as do many of the bnei Yerushalayim. After exchanging brachos, Rav Yaakov Meir accepted a drink of l’chayim from his host and waited for the Ga’avad to drink as well — but he didn’t. Instead, the Ga’avad waited for Rav Yaakov Meir to finish drinking, and in an instant, he lifted the cup and poured the remaining liquid into his own cup. Only then, with “shirayim” from his distinguished visitor in his own cup, did he make a l’chayim.
