"I remember his imposing presence, his wide smile, and the tall cylinder hat that he wore — but most of all it was the warm greeting and the 10-lira note that he handed each one of us children and told us to go buy something special for ourselves. I’ll never forget that kindness and sensitivity for the rest of my life.”

 

—A guest at the E&S Tours Pesach program in Šibenik, Croatia, who, after hearing a talk by Dovi Safier on the great Torah leaders of the modern era including Rav Eliezer Silver, remembered the time Rav Silver visited them in Israel (the man’s mother was a cousin) when he was there for the 1954 Knessiah Gedolah.
