The Republican Party is divided over whether Santos should step down or not

Republican Congressman George Santos’s laconic response to reporters who asked why he isn’t turning in his resignation. As readers will remember, Santos lied about his background, including his supposed Jewish heritage. With the Republicans enjoying the slimmest of majorities, opinion in the party is divided over whether Santos should step down or not. While a string of Republican congressmen, as well as his local district party, have called for his resignation, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has stepped up to his defense. McCarthy knows that if a special election for Santos’s seat is held, chances are his already shaky majority of four seats will shrink even further. For the moment, anyway, it seems Santos isn’t going anywhere.
