All Eyes on Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell
| September 6, 2017C ongress is back from its Labor Day break and all eyes are on House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell both of whom are faced with a mission impossible. September is a dramatic even “brutal” month in terms of the volume of legislation that must be passed by Congress under very tight deadlines.
Numerous critical obstacles must be surmounted by the end of the month such as approving the budget which will necessarily include a hefty compensation package for Harvey victims. No less crucial is the need to reach an agreement over the debt ceiling to prevent a government shutdown — all in 12 legislating days.
In addition there will be another bipartisan effort to alter Obamacare and on September 27 the drug companies need to decide if they will be marketing ACA coverage for 2018.
But there’s more: Trump has promised he’ll shut down the government if they don’t somehow manage to push through the funding for his Mexican border wall. And the president’s decision on DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) is also expected to make waves in the House of Representatives.
Based on the pace of Ryan’s and McConnell’s legislative successes under Trump we can expect a series of twitter storms from the president over the coming weeks. (Excerpted from The Current Issue 676)
