Trump Pushes His Own Hot Button

EIGHT YEARS LATER Trump’s tweets and appointments have reassured pro-Israel and Jewish Americans that the eight years of Barack Obama’s hostility to the Jewish state are a thing of the past

P residents of the United States hold the power of the button — the nuclear launch codes — and the bully pulpit to advance vital national interests. In the weeks since the November 8 election Donald Trump has seized both the bully pulpit and the button — the publish button on his Twitter account.

Tweeting to his 19 million followers the president-elect is using the medium to communicate his policies save American jobs respond to critics and share with the American people what’s on his mind as he prepares to enter the Oval Office next Friday.

One of the things on his mind is the State of Israel. In a break with the Obama administration Trump has broadcast his strong support for the Jewish state in a number of Tweets. One of the strongest came after Secretary of State John Kerry delivered his final speech on Israel widely panned as unfair and unhelpful to Israel or the Middle East. “We cannot continue to let Israel be treated with such total disdain and disrespect” Trump wrote. “They used to have a great friend in the US but not anymore. The beginning of the end was the horrible Iran deal and now this (UN)! Stay strong Israel January 20th is fast approaching!”

The unfiltered and unedited tweets suggest that Trump’s outspoken support for Israel is sincere and personal. The tweets have also enabled Trump to reassure members of the Jewish community of his Israel bona fides.

“On issues of such magnitude like Israel it is particularly encouraging to hear directly from Trump as opposed to State Department-approved edited statements” says Chaskel Bennett a respected Orthodox activist in Brooklyn New York.
