The dipping sauce doubles as a marinade in this party favorite!

SERVES 12

  • 12 cloves garlic
  • oil, to cover garlic
  • 12 slices beef fry or thin Montreal-style pastrami
  • 12 Medjool dates, pitted
Sweet and Spicy Sauce
  • ¼ cup sweet chili sauce
  • 1 Tbsp mustard
  • 1 Tbsp apricot jam
  • 2 Tbsp maple syrup

Blend the ingredients for the sauce with a hand blender or mix very well with a fork until smooth.

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Place the garlic in a small ovenproof bowl and cover with oil. Cover and bake for 45 minutes, until cloves are soft but not falling apart. Remove from oven and cool.

Lay out the pieces of beef fry or pastrami. Brush with the sauce. Place 1 clove garlic into each date and roll the beef around the date. Stick a toothpick in to keep it together.

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

Bake for 20 minutes. Serve warm with remaining dipping sauce.
