Overheard: Issue 970

“Responsibility leads to ability, and not the other way around”

“The Torah recounts the episode in which Yaakov rolled the stone off the be’er. Why is this relevant for us? I once heard an answer in the name of Rav Malkiel Kotler. It’s a concept that changed my life.

“He explained that because Yaakov was mekabel achrayus, he was endowed with extraordinary abilities. What you see from here is that responsibility leads to ability, and not the other way around.”

—Charlie Harary of Olami, addressing Lakewood Fellowship students in the new Torah Links campus.
