Leftover Legend

All your favorite Shabbos flavors come together in one irresistible creation. Brisket, farfel, and potato kugel are all blended into one hearty, flavorful concoction warmed to perfection and piled onto a soft sesame stick or hoagie. Finished with a tangy, crispy slaw and a signature sauce, this sandwich is rich, comforting, and totally hits the spot.

Serves 6

  • 1 large Spanish onion, sliced
  • 3 Tbsp oil
  • 10 slices brisket, chopped, or 2 cups pulled beef
  • 1 5x5-inch (13x13-cm) slice potato kugel
  • 1 cup cooked farfel
  • 1/4  cup gravy, plus more for dipping
  • 6 sesame sticks or hoagies

Special Sauce

  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 Tbsp pickle relish
  • 2 Tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp hot sauce
  • 1/2  tsp garlic powder
  • salt, to taste

Red Cabbage Slaw

  • 2 cups shredded red cabbage
  • 1 cup thinly sliced red, orange, or yellow peppers
  • 1 cup chopped cilantro
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • juice of 1 lime
  • salt and pepper, to taste

In a large sauté pan, sauté the onion in oil until slightly golden. Add beef, potato kugel, and farfel. Continue sautéing all ingredients, chopping as you go, until it resembles a soft, crumbly mixture. Add 1/4 cup gravy and cook until the mixture is heated through.

To prepare the special sauce, place all ingredients in a small bowl and mix.

To prepare the slaw, place all ingredients in a bowl and mix.

To prepare the sandwiches, smear some special sauce on both halves of each soft sesame stick or hoagie. Place a generous amount of the meat mixture on the roll and top with slaw. Cover with the second half of the bread and serve with some extra gravy for dipping.
