Serves 6
- 1 large Spanish onion, sliced
- 3 Tbsp oil
- 10 slices brisket, chopped, or 2 cups pulled beef
- 1 5x5-inch (13x13-cm) slice potato kugel
- 1 cup cooked farfel
- 1/4 cup gravy, plus more for dipping
- 6 sesame sticks or hoagies
Special Sauce
- 3/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 Tbsp pickle relish
- 2 Tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp hot sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- salt, to taste
Red Cabbage Slaw
- 2 cups shredded red cabbage
- 1 cup thinly sliced red, orange, or yellow peppers
- 1 cup chopped cilantro
- 3 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- juice of 1 lime
- salt and pepper, to taste
In a large sauté pan, sauté the onion in oil until slightly golden. Add beef, potato kugel, and farfel. Continue sautéing all ingredients, chopping as you go, until it resembles a soft, crumbly mixture. Add 1/4 cup gravy and cook until the mixture is heated through.
To prepare the special sauce, place all ingredients in a small bowl and mix.
To prepare the slaw, place all ingredients in a bowl and mix.
To prepare the sandwiches, smear some special sauce on both halves of each soft sesame stick or hoagie. Place a generous amount of the meat mixture on the roll and top with slaw. Cover with the second half of the bread and serve with some extra gravy for dipping.
