Picking Up Socks?

Besides him needing to learn basic derech eretz for me, what will his wife say?

I need to remind my son to put his socks in the laundry Every. Single. Dday.  I can remind him every day for a month straight, and then if I forget the next day, there are his socks sitting on the floor.

Deal: keep reminding him, maybe institute reward and punishment. Besides him needing to learn basic derech eretz for me, what will his wife say?

No deal: Enough. He’s a good kid, I cannot keep going blue in the face over this minor issue. I will put his socks in the laundry each night, and let his wife deal with it when it’s her turn

  • It’s not the socks that are the issue. The fact that he cannot follow simple instructions, that’s the problem. Nip it in the bud.
  • Just leave them there. One day when he has no socks left, tell him that clean socks happen when dirty socks are put into the hamper — by him.
  • Sarah Chana Radcliffe taught me that sometimes when kids do this, it’s not behavioral, so incentives won’t work long term. Sometimes a kid is just wired to be the kid who forgets to put his socks in the laundry.
  • If your method isn’t working, try a new method! Buy him a small basket to put near his bed, and that will be his “sock” hamper. It’s actually easier to do just a sock load.
