Whole Wheat Soft Pretzels

A great snack for everyone! Your kids will have fun making these.

YIELDS 16 PRETZELS

  • 1½ cups warm water
  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • 1 Tbsp dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp light olive or canola oil
  • 3½ cups whole wheat flour, divided
  • ½ cup wheat germ
Glaze
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tbsp water
Optional Toppings
  • Everything spice
  • salt
  • sesame seeds
  • poppy seeds
  • minced garlic

In a bowl, dissolve yeast in water with honey. Let sit until bubbly.

Stir in salt, oil, and 2 cups of flour. Beat until smooth. Add wheat germ and remaining flour to make a soft dough.

Knead for 5 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Let rise 45 minutes to 1 hour, until doubled.

Punch down dough and divide into 16 equal portions. Roll into 16-inch (40-cm) long ropes. Shape into pretzel twists or other shapes.

Transfer pretzels to greased baking sheets. Let rise 20 minutes. Brush glaze on top and sprinkle with desired topping.

Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
