Overheard: Issue 905

"Are we preparing ourselves to be on the madreigah that Mashiach will tolerate us?"

"The Malbim predicted that Mashiach would come in 1927, and here we are almost a hundred years later and Mashiach is still not here. People always say that we want Mashiach, but the real question we should be asking ourselves is, does Mashiach want us? Are we preparing ourselves to be on the madreigah that Mashiach will tolerate us? With the passing of Rav Chaim, we should all certainly feel that Mashiach is very close. The Jewish Ukrainian refugees, who had to leave their houses and families overnight with only a few belongings in their suitcase, should help to make us realize that we too should have our suitcase ready and packed to go.”

—Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky, addressing a group of bochurim from Mesivta Yesodei Yisroel of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, who were visiting the Philadelphia yeshivah
