Planning to serve your family watermelon this summer? I thought so! Here are some fun ways to serve everyone’s favorite summer fruit. The photo shoot got especially exciting because Hudi used his innovative photography tricks to capture the fun.
Watermelon Vase
YOU WILL NEED: medium-sized round watermelon serrated bread knife, or similar large spoon and bowl 5–6 bunches dark pink carnations
- Choose a spot a few inches down from the top of the watermelon and cut off the top. Try to cut a fairly consistent line all the way around. Use the knife to run a cut along the inside of the watermelon just to help loosen up the fruit. Use your spoon to scoop out most, if not all, of the watermelon fruit into your bowl.
- Create a tight bouquet of flowers, and cut off the bottom of the stems.
- Arrange the flowers so that they follow the form of the top of the watermelon.
Watermelon Popsicles
Keeping with our watermelon theme, here’s a refreshing way to freeze your favorite sorbet recipe.
YOU WILL NEED: glass cups paper cones your favorite red sorbet recipe (I used Rivky Kleiman’s pitaya bowl recipe from Simply Gourmet) kiwi sorbet or plain blended kiwis popsicle sticks
- Line up glass cups on a heavy cookie sheet, and place a paper cone into each glass.
- Fill the cone approximately ⅔ full with red sorbet. Make sure the sorbet is frozen enough to hold a popsicle stick in place.
- Place a popsicle stick into the center of each cone, and freeze until firm. 4. Pour about .–. inch (1–2 cm) of kiwi mixture over the red sorbet.
- Freeze until firm.
- Tear the paper off the ice pops and enjoy!
Watermelon Fish
You don’t need much to create this sweet sea treat. Enjoy this cute little activity for a healthy snack.
YOU WILL NEED: watermelon sharp knife candy for the fish eye
- Slice the watermelon in half. Cut off a 1-inch (3-cm) slice from one of the cut sides, trying to keep the cut as consistent as possible.
- Place the slice on your work surface and make 1-inch (3-cm) cuts across the watermelon slice. Place the slices on the platter leaving a .-inch (1.-cm) space between each piece.
- Turn the last two pieces in the opposite direction to create the tail. 4. Cut a notch out of the “mouth,” and place a candy eye on the fish.
