Help! Fire! It was Shabbos Chanukah and Sora’s father and brothers had just left to shul after candlelighting. Suddenly Sora saw a candle tip over and fall onto the couch right near her little brother. “My mother grabbed him and we tried to pour water around the area of the fire but not directly on it because it was Shabbos. The fire got bigger and bigger and we quickly started getting everyone out of the house. We ran across the street and asked a non-Jew to call the fire department but it took them forever to come. By the time they got there the whole main floor of our house was on fire.” Everyone came out to watch the firemen and Sora seven at the time remembers that she thought it was fun to see all the neighbors outside late at night. “At first I thought it was very scary and urgent but my mother was very chilled. We had to sleep at a neighbor’s house that night; everything was ruined.”To read the rest of this story please buy this issue of Mishpacha or sign up for a weekly subscription
