The FBI’s Eye on New York

A group of federal agents dressed smartly in crisp suits stared up at a monitor where a lone figure wrapped in a tallis was swaying back and forth in prayer. “Where is that?” askedDiegoRodriguez the new assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York field office. “That is one of the many synagogues currently being monitored in New York ” explainsRabbiYankieMeyer founder of Misaskim a nonprofit organization that provides security funeral services and event coordination for New York’s chareidi community. “That man is late for morning prayers. He doesn’t know the FBI is watching him.” “We’ll have a talk with him later ” jokesRodriguez to the amusement of all.Rodriguez who assumed his post in December 2014 oversees all operations and personnel in the five boroughs of New York City eight counties in New York state and JFK and La Guardia Airports. On this July morning Rodriguez is joined by officials from New York’s fire and emergency response agencies along with representatives from Jewish volunteer organizations. Misaskim headquarters where Jewish leaders and law enforcement agencies often gather to collaborate when dealing with death and disaster is just one stop on a tour of Brooklyn’s chareidi neighborhoods. The purpose saysRabbiMeyer is to get to know one another.
