As shemittah year 5775 draws to a close that’s the sight greeting many farmers throughout Eretz Yisrael. “I’m used to showing people clean fields ” says Doron Tavig who observed shemittah properly for the first time this past year. “But now everything is full of weeds. I’ll have to remove them all before I can start planting again.” Doron isn’t the only one wincing at the sight of overgrown fields neglected vineyards and rodent-infested greenhouses. During this past year Eretz Yisrael was blessed with abundant rains and the weeds drank every raindrop. Therefore even farmers like Doron who fumigated their fields before last Rosh Hashanah are going to be faced with a massive cleanup before they can plant new crops — and see some money coming in. Yet they don’t regret their decision for a minute. The siyata d’Shmaya has been too obvious.
