The British Royal Family

britishDid you know that one of the reasons Hashem gave us parents is to help us understand our relationship with Him as our Father? And to help us grasp the concept of malchus — the glory of royalty — Hashem created kings and queens. The malchuyos section of musaf of Rosh HaShanah talks about Hashem’s sovereignty (kingship). To help us understand a little of Hashem’s glory let’s take a look at human royalty — the British royal family.

The Royal Family

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II now eighty-six years old is the queen of Britain. Her husband is not referred to as “king” but rather as Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh. You might wonder why her husband isn’t referred to as king. That’s because the law states that if the first in line to the throne is a male he becomes king and his wife becomes queen; if it is a female she becomes queen but her husband does not become king.
