Status Glow: The Lowdown on Yom Tov Makeup
| September 9, 2025Some of our most frequently asked questions, and some tried-and-true answers

I get many questions before Yom Tov about putting on makeup that will last as long as possible. Here are some of our most frequently asked questions, and some tried-and-true answers.
Mascara That Lasts
Q: My mascara is always flaking and running under my eyes by the first morning; how can I make it last longer?
A: Usually, the culprit of running mascara is oily eyelids. They transfer onto your lashes and cause the product to break down. You can try to minimize the oiliness by using a good eyeshadow primer or concealer to prime your lids. Then set a powder on and around your lids and under your eyes to reduce oil production and prevent smudging.
Make sure you’re using a waterproof or tubing mascara. My favorite tubing mascaras are the Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Tubing Mascara and the Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara.
Blush and Bronzer
Q: Why do my blush and bronzer always disappear after a few hours?
A: For most people, blush and bronzer tend to be the first products to fade on the face. Try layering your products so they last longer. You’ll want to layer a cream bronzer first, then a cream blush. Then, set your full face with a mist of setting spray, and once it’s dry, a thin layer of pressed powder. Next, apply your powder bronzer and blush in the same place where you applied your cream products. Once that’s done, apply your
longest-lasting setting spray.
Pillow Woes
Q: While I’m sleeping at night, I smush my face into my pillow and my makeup comes off onto the pillowcase. Is there anything I can do about that?
A: This is a common issue. Of course, if it’s possible for you to sleep on your back, that would be ideal. Otherwise, you can try using a silk pillowcase or put a slip on your pillow at night. It’ll reduce the friction between your face and the pillowcase and keep your makeup on longer.
A good setting spray will really help lock in your makeup. The ONE/SIZE On ’Til Dawn Setting Spray is a favorite among many makeup artists.
Lips Today, Gone Tomorrow
Q: What can I do to help my lipstick last longer? It’s always gone so quickly!
A: Lipstick is a hard one, because as you’re eating, your lipstick tends to disappear with the food. First of all, use a long-lasting lipstick. For Shabbos and Yom Tov, I really like the Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lipcolor Liquid Lipstick and the Static Cosmetics Kiss Proof Liquid Lipstick.
Layering your lipstick is really your best bet for longevity.
Start with a good lip stain. That way, even if your lipstick loses pigment, the lip stain underneath will peek through and give you color. Next, line your lips with a good, long-lasting lip liner, and then top with the long-lasting lipstick. Add a lip gloss and it should last a while.
Glow Longer
Q: I love the glowy, natural look, but how can I make it last on Yom Tov?
A: This will really depend on your skin type. In most cases, general matte looks will last longer on the skin. The key to long-lasting makeup is to work in thin layers and build up as needed, make sure to set with powders along the way. Try mixing a glowy product into your foundation. You can also use a pretty highlight powder and apply it in the areas where you want to look glowy.
I prefer a glowy highlighter over a glittery highlighter. The Rare Beauty Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter (or the Essence Be My Highlight powder highlighter for a more affordable option) is a great option.
Don’t Lose Hope
A good thing to remember is that it is normal for your make up to fade over Yom Tov. Makeup is not really made to last over 48 hours. These tips can definitely be helpful in making your makeup last a little longer, but nothing is guaranteed to last all Yom Tov. It isn’t necessarily something you did or didn’t do — it really depends on your skin type and your specific skin makeup.
Have a beautiful Yom Tov!
