Rerouting: Chapter 5

shiur

"Can I put down color war captain?” Nachi asked.

I sniggered.

“What?! It shows leadership” he said.

“It reeks of desperation” I answered.

Nachi was pulling together a résumé to present at his interview for the store-manager position.

“I have no other experience” he said. “I tutored and gave a Mishnah Berurah shiur.”

“That’s good stuff” I told him.

“I was in charge of the tape library in high school.”

“We’ll call it audio library curator” I fluffed.

Nachi laughed. Then his expression turned somber. “It’s crazy how I’m 29 and have nothing to put on a résumé?! It almost looks like I’ve done nothing for the past ten years of my life.”

“Didn’t you help manage the Pesach co-op when you were a bochur?” I asked.

Nachi nodded and added one more thing to his short list.

“Did I earn a BTL from BMG?” Nachi asked me.

I shrugged. I had never thought of Nachi earning a degree: it was irrelevant — until it wasn’t. He made a phone call and found out that he had in fact earned a BTL. One more qualification to add.

The interview went well but we were still both nervous and it was hard to concentrate as we looked around for apartments to rent. We were checking out the first floor of a two-family house when Nachi’s phone rang. A quick glance at the screen — the store manager. Nachi excused himself and ducked out the back exit of the house to answer the call in private. A few minutes later he returned. He looked shocked. Then he smiled. He got it! He got the job! I smiled broadly held back sudden tears felt relief wash through me.

Nachi had a job. One thing had fallen into place. Surely our lives would be back on track soon.
