What is 3D? The word “3-D” is actually an abbreviation or shortened version of “three-dimensional.” A dimension is a measurement of the size of something in a particular direction such as the length width height diameter or volume. In geometry a point has zerodimensions;a figure having only length such as a line has one dimension; a plane or surface (flat object) has twodimensions;and a figure having volume (depth)three dimensions. A regular photo or video clip is in 2-D — the two dimensions of width and height. But real life isn’t two-dimensional it’s three-dimensional as our physical world also has depth to it. For example in the physical world the mountains may be miles away behind the river but a flat two-dimensional picture can’t show that clearly. Something 3-D however has all three dimensions of width height and depth and so if you see an image in 3-D it looks much more realistic as it’s that much closer to how we really see things.
