Yummm! Just imagining that bite of soft vanilla ice cream runny chocolate fudge and a crunchy sugar cone makes my mouth water. Are you one of those kids who insist ice cream tastes much better licked from a cone than spooned out of a cup? Well join the club! Let’s find out more about ice cream cones through the ages…
Year 1700
After a big heavy meal one sure needed a yummy wafer to settle the stomach and calm digestion. So… out rolled the dessert cart loaded with cornucopia-shaped wafers filled with all sorts of creams fruit pastes and iced puddings. What a luxurious sweet table!
Year 1807
Fashionable French women gathered in the cafés to gossip over ices ice cream and mocha. Yum. Double Yum. There doesn’t seem to be any written info about their eating receptacles although there’s a sketch showing a woman licking something out of a handheld container. Looks suspiciously like an ice cream cone.

Note to Readers: The exact history of the next two facts are a bit murky. Lots of people like to claim credit for and tell tales about the invention of the humble but oh-so-important cone.
Year 1896
Italo Marchiony walked up and down Wall Street (in New York City) each day selling lemon ices and ice cream. Customers would cool off with these frozen delights served in glass cups. Many broke their cups. Many walked off and simply forgot to return them. Italo did not like washing them. So he came up with the idea of a pastry cup that could also be eaten. And if it broke… not his problem.
Year 1904
Location — St. Louis Missouri. Event — World’s Fair. Ernest Hamwi was doing brisk business selling zalabia a Syrian waffle-like pastry. Next to him was a frustrated ice cream vendor selling ice cream faster than he was able to wash out the glass cups. Enter Hamwi who saved the day by rolling some of his waffles into cones. Instant edible delicious.
