Jr. Lab: Friction

Paved roads are always slightly rough and bumpy instead of smooth. And car tires are also not smooth but have patterns of lines all over them. This helps tires grip the little bumps on the road and create something called friction. Friction is aforcethat holds back the movement of a sliding object. It’s the force that causes two non-smooth objects to grip each other. When a car drives the patterned tires grip the road and continue turning while the car is moving. That’s because there’s friction between the tires and the road.
