We love real flowers. We do. But there’s a time and place for artificial flowers, too, especially luxury artificial flowers. Faux flowers are perfect for summertime arrangements when the temperatures are high and fresh flowers wilt quickly. Skilled DIYers and newbies alike can have fun making their own floral arrangements to last way past the summer season.
Elegant Gold Planter
This rich and vibrant-looking flower-filled planter will add color and texture to whichever space you showcase it in, be it your dining table, end table, or anywhere else.
Supplies:
- 12 3/4” antique brass handle bowl planter (Jamali Garden)
- 12” piece of round foam
- green latex sedum balls (B&J Florist Supply Company)
- purple succulent stems (B&J Florist Supply Company)
- hydrangea fruit flowers in three colors (Ali Express, Jamali Garden)
- green and pink fennel spray (Jamali Garden)
- flocked succulent mini tree spray (Jamali Garden)
- skewers
- Amazing Goop All-purpose Adhesive and/or E6000 adhesive spray
- spray paint in the color blush (Jamali Garden)
- wire cutter
- scissors
Instructions:
Measure and trim the piece of foam so that it fits snugly into the planter. Work slowly so you don’t cut too much.
Trim the flower stems and remove all excess leaves. (Save the leaves.)
Cut off the bottom round tip of the sedum balls, and glue them onto a skewer.
For a pop of summer color, use a spray paint on the flowers. Hold the spray can about one foot away from the flowers and lightly mist it over them. The spray will dry shortly after contact. Work carefully and add another layer if necessary.
Insert the first flower stem into the foam so that you get an idea of how much of the stem to trim off. Remember, the height of the different flowers should vary very slightly.
Trim each flower stem.
Divide the foam into four sections and visually mark off each section.
Dab or spray a little glue onto each of the succulents and the hydrangea fruit flower stems. (Reserve the fennel spray flowers for the outer edges.)
Then, working your way in from the outer edges, insert each flower stem into place. Use dark and light flowers in opposing corners.
Begin filling in the center line with the green sedum balls, the succulents, and more of the hydrangea fruit flowers. Dab or spray each stem with adhesive and press it into the foam.
Add in some more purple succulent stems at a higher level than the rest of the bouquet for more depth.
Add in the fennel spray flowers on the outer edge.
Fill in around the edges and between each flower with the little leaves you trimmed off the stems.
Tips:
While creating your arrangement, turn the bowl around.
Don’t be afraid to bend the wires of your faux floral arrangements and have some flowers hanging down. This gives them a more realistic look.
Invest in high-end latex flowers (not silk). Their life-like appearance will enhance your living spaces and make them look like the real deal. They can be found at the following sources: Jamali Garden, B&J Florist Supply, Ali Express, Afloral, Amazon, Michaels, Hobby Lobby
Succulent Hanging Planter
Succulents are trending at the moment. Here’s an outdoor hanging planter filled with faux succulents for ensured longevity. Using a hanging planter means you can add greenery to any corner of your home without compromising on space.
Supplies:
- hanging fiber cement bowl planter (Anthropologie)
- 2 round pieces of green foam, the size of the planter (Amazon, craft stores such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby)
- faux succulents, such as:
- frosted tillandsia
- flocked succulent mini tree spray
- finger flocked succulent
- grey and green nertera berry pick
- blue artificial echeveria succulent pick
- long hanging eucalyptus or sedum leaves
- (All of the above-mentioned succulents were purchased at Jamali Garden. They can also be found on Amazon and in craft stores.)
- Amazing Goop All-purpose Adhesive and/or E6000 adhesive spray
- wire cutter
- scissors
- preserved moss
Instructions:
Insert the foam into the planter and glue it down. (If the foam doesn’t fill the entire planter, fill in the empty spaces with moss.) If necessary for height, use two pieces of foam stacked one on top of the other.
Add glue to the stem of the frosted tillandsia succulent, and insert it gently into the center of the foam.
Decide how you want to place the rest of the succulents around the frosted tillandsia. Then add glue or spray adhesive to each stem, and push it down into the foam. Repeat until the entire piece of foam is covered in flowers.
Rotate the planter to check if all sides are filled evenly, and fill in the empty slots accordingly.
Baby’s Breath Planter
Soft, white and airy, Baby’s Breath have a magical aura. They’re so pretty on their own — no need to mix these with anything else to create an elegant and modern planter.
Supplies:
- 10” shiny chrome planter (Lowes, “Vasesource” 10”x 5” silver ceramic planter)
- 10” piece of green foam (Amazon)
- 18 bunches of faux Baby’s Breath (also known as Gypsophila Spray [Amazon])
- Amazing Goop All-purpose Adhesive and/or E6000 adhesive spray
- foam spray (Amazon)
- wire cutter and scissors
Instructions:
Measure and trim the piece of foam so it fits snugly into the planter. If necessary for height, use two pieces of foam stacked on top of each other.
Trim each flower stem and remove both the longer and smaller buds along it.
Insert the longer stems into the foam to check for height. Cut the stems to size so that you have taller and shorter ones. You should use the taller stems in the center of the arrangement and the shorter ones for the outer edges of the bowl.
Dab a little glue or adhesive onto each stem. Then, starting with the longer stems and working from the center outwards, insert each stem into the foam.
Add shorter stems to fill in the gaps in the arrangement, and to cover the foam.
Wearing gloves, attach the nozzle to the foam spray. Spray gently into the center bottom of the arrangement. Work your way outwards, all around. (The foam spray will act as a layer of protective sealant. It will be dry, soft, and pliable.)
