As we fly over Kenya you’ll see what a wild wonderful country it is. Bordered by Tanzania Ethiopia Somalia Sudan and Uganda Kenya is split almost exactly in two by the equator which means its different regions have very different countryside and climates. The name Kenya comes from the native name for Mount Kenya which in English means “place with ostriches” — as the snow-capped mountain peak is said to look like white ostrich feathers.

Kenya has a long coastline along the Indian Ocean with stunning tropical beaches while in the north there are vast plains of savannah grasslands and dry desert. But if we fly further southwest we’ll see huge forests and mountains including the extinct volcano which gives the country its name Mount Kenya. Mount Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa after Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro (which we can actually see from Kenya) and has eleven melting glaciers which provide water to over seven million people.
