A Constant Awareness

There are six mitzvos that you can do anytime anywhere. The mitzvos themselves are quite familiar to you and all observant Jews; it’s the bundling of all six into one unique package that may be a novel idea.

Most mitzvos require a specific framework. They apply to a particular time such as eating matzah on Seder night; in a distinct place such as separating terumah and maaser from fruits grown in Eretz Yisrael; or in a certain situation such as paying a worker on time. The Sefer Hachinuch tells us that out of the 613 there are six mitzvos temidiyos six constant mitzvos. They present a unique opportunity — they can be fulfilled at any time in any place by any person through thought alone.

These six constant mitzvos are as follows:

• to believe in Hashem

• not to believe in any other powers

• to know that Hashem is One

• to love Hashem

• to fear Hashem

• not to stray after our hearts and eyes

On the simple level these mitzvos present a fantastic opportunity — the deal of a lifetime or better the deal of eternal life. As the Mishnah Berurah writes: “Each moment that one contemplates these thoughts he earns reward and there is no limit to the reward for mitzvos.”
