When the daughter of the Duke of Milan Italy married the heir to the Kingdom of Naples no expense was spared. The bride’s dowry was worth 200 000 florins (gold coins) and of that 66 000 florins were spent on jewels and clothes alone. In fact two of the bride’s dresses were so extravagant that they were classified as jewelry rather than clothing. These dresses were made of crimson silk and one had sleeves of green and gold and was covered with pearls and silver and gold thread.
