A Gentle Touch

“Speak to Bnei Yisrael and say to them: When any man of you brings an offering to Hashem…”
(Vayikra 1:2)

Seforno: When a man brings from within himself with Vidui and submission as it says “We will replace bulls with the offerings of our lips ” (Hoshea 14:3) and as it says “The sacrifices of Hashem are a broken spirit” (Tehillim 51:19).
Ramban: Since a person’s actions are carried out through thought speech and action Hashem commanded that when man sins and brings a korban he should lean his hands on it to parallel the action confess with his mouth to parallel the speech and burn in fire the innards and kidneys (the vehicles of the thoughts and desires) and the legs (paralleling man’s hands and feet) which perform all actions.
And he will dash the blood on the Mizbeiach to parallel the blood of his soul so that man will think when he does all this that he sinned against G-d with his body and soul and it would be fitting for him to burn his body and spill his blood if not for the Creator in His kindness accepting from him an exchange and this korban atoning [for him] its blood in place of his the soul in place of his soul the main limbs of the korban paralleling his main limbs… (Rav Chaim Ephraim Zeitchik Mayaanei Hachaim)
Once there was a mother who had a dream.
In that dream everyone is sitting around the Shabbos table and singing Shabbos zemiros in soul-stirring harmony. Everyone is dressed beautifully. No one leaves the table suddenly and parks himself on the couch. Each child listens without interrupting waiting his turn to share something on the parshah and afterward there’s a family discussion in which everyone participates. There is a warm wonderful atmosphere.
She is determined to realize her dream. At her Shabbos table she insists every child sit quietly throughout the entire meal. She demands they all sing zemiros prods them to answer her husband’s questions on the parshah. This one is tired and that one is bored but she soldiers on. No you may not leave the table. No you can’t have peanut butter and jelly on your challah — that’s not Shabbosdik.
She ensures that her husband has a quiet chunk of time on Friday so he can find a dvar Torah that will be both uplifting and practical. Some weeks he just wants to tell a story but she insists on more. As he speaks one child fidgets another whispers. She glares at them.
Why is it so hard to make a lofty dream come true?
Even when in a state of devotion and tremendous enthusiasm a person should be careful not to harm someone and this applies not only to [being careful toward] people who have free choice but even to a creature [such as] a small animal for it says “And he shall lean his hands on the head of his korban and slaughter it at the door of the Ohel Moed.” The Baal Haturim says: “It says ‘And he shall lean his hands ’ regarding the bull and by the sheep and goat it adds the word ‘es’ before saying ‘his hand ’ because a bull is strong and [therefore] he can lean on it with his full force. This is not the case with the sheep and the goat and therefore it adds ‘es ’ [teaching that it] means a light touch. (ibid.)
The small lambs are sometimes weak distracted dreamy or energetic. Look at us Mommy they try to say with their soft bleating. See how sensitive we are how differently our inner world is from your dreams. Don’t neglect us in your fervor and desire to get close to Hashem.
These days her dream Shabbos table looks different. The children kibitz speak loudly interrupt each other. Sometimes they even leave the table. Her husband shares what he finds inspiring. She serves delicious Shabbos food yet Moishy sometimes douses his cholent in ketchup.
Her table is boisterous but happy. Her children love Shabbos. And that is what she wants most of all.
