Educated Guess:
Yosef was the favorite or so the brothers thought
It bothered all the brothers and they all felt so distraught.
They were very jealous because Yosef got it all
They plotted against him they wanted him to fall.
They despised the special coat; they were angry and uptight
When Yosef told them of the dream he had dreamt one night.
First eleven sheaves were bowing down to one
And then bowing to one star were 11 stars the moon and sun.
One day Yaakov sent Yosef into the fields of Shechem
The brothers were caring for the sheep; he should look out for them.
When they saw him coming they all began to plot
That they will throw him in a pit like it or not.
One brother decided that without a doubt
He’ll come back when they’re gone and let Yosef come out.
Who was this brother? Where was Yosef thrown?
What was inside of it? Look at Rashi; it’s well known.
Parshah in Action:
This week’s parshah talks about the jealousy of the brothers toward Yosef. We learn in Pirkei Avos “V’ahavta l’reiacha kamocha” love your brother as you love yourself. Here is a game called “Do you love your neighbor?”
All the players sit in a circle except for one person who stands and asks someone “Do you love your neighbor?” If he/she says YES then everyone moves one seat in any direction and the person that’s IT tries to get a seat. If he/she does then the person left standing is IT. However if he says NO then the IT asks “Who do you love?” The person that was chosen then answers by describing something about other people in the circle for example: “I love those who have earrings or glasses or brown hair etc.” Those people then have to move to any seat they can get except for their own and the person who is IT tries to get a seat too.
Parshah Treat:
Here’s a cake to remind us that Yosef was thrown into a pit. We chose a cake with “crumbs” on it to resemble the dirt that he was thrown into. It will be a PITy for those who don’t get to eat this cake! You can add in some jelly snakes too.
What You Need:
apple cake and filling (recipe below)
candy snakes
toy person or cookie person
Apple Cake and Filling
Filling:
2 Tbsp cinnamon
4–5Tbsp sugar
6–8 sliced apples
Cake
2 cups sugar
1 cup applesauce
4 tsp vanilla
½ cup orange juice
1 pinch salt
4 eggs lightly beaten
3 cups flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
1 tsp nutmeg
Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a bundt pan. Combine the cinnamon and sugar and set aside 1 tablespoon. Mix the prepared apples with the cinnamon and sugar and set aside. For the cake mix together the sugar applesauce vanilla orange juice salt and eggs. Combine flour baking powder and nutmeg and put into sugar mixture.
Spoon a little more than one third of the batter into prepared pan. Cover with half of apple mixture then spoon in remaining batter and apple slices. Sprinkle the top lightly with the reserved cinnamon-sugar.
Bake for 1 hour or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
