Underwater Hotel

Imagine having to scuba dive to get to your hotel. That’s what visitors to Jules’ Undersea Lodge inKey LargoFloridahave to do. Visitors put on scuba gear and swim toward the hotel through the tropical waters of the Emerald Lagoon and enter through an opening in the bottom. There a 5' x 7' “moon pool” entrance in the floor of the building makes entering the hotel feel like you’re surfacing through a small swimming pool. This is the wet room where you’ll leave your gear and dry off before entering the living area.

Great Things in Small Packages

This hotel won’t win any awards for size — the whole place is about the size of a cottage and can fit up to only six people at a time. It stands on legs about five feet off the bottom and is filled with compressed air which prevents water from rising and flooding the rooms.

There is a land-based “command center” connected to the Lodge by an umbilical cable that delivers constant fresh air water power and communication constantly. In fact the hotel owner says that the constant flow of air to the Lodge actually benefits the area’s marine life because it adds oxygen to the entire surrounding body of water.
