Interview: Eyewitness to Hurricane Sandy

hurricane sandyHi Avigdor how did you prepare for the hurricane?

InQueens people didn’t prepare by banging wooden slats over their windows although they did in other areas. We told everyone to make sure they had flashlights and batteries in case the power went out and to make sure they had all the supplies they’d need for a few days in case the weather was so bad they couldn’t leave home. As for Hatzolah and Chaverim we sent messages out to our volunteers to be safe and cautious. We always try to help as many people as we can but safety comes first.

What does Chaverim actually do?

We formed in January 2008. Chaverim literally means “friends” and that’s what we are. We’re the best type of friends to have and we’re friends to everyone! People call us when they’re stranded when their car battery needs a jump if someone’s locked out of their house or car if they have a flat tire anything. The calls come in to our dispatcher and someone will go out to the scene and help the caller.
