How Many Voices Does It Take to Make a Choir?
| December 26, 2018Adult choirs have carried the day over the past few years of Jewish music. Far from just providing the backup vocals and choir sections on studio albums as of old, their appearance at simchahs and functions has morphed from being a luxurious touch to a standard in some communities. But how many guys do you actually need for that special choir sound? According to Yoily Polatseck of the Zemiros choir, “to really get the full choir effect, it’s preferable to have four or five voices. But I’ve learned that forming a choir begins with the right blend of voices, understanding the characteristics and capability of each voice, and knowing where it’ll shine. Professionally selected, thoroughly prepared so they know exactly which notes to sing, even three people can sound great.
