Jolly Solly: Tuki Pops In for a Visit
| March 15, 2017
J olly Solly looked concerned and anxious — most unlike his usual jolly self. He’d just received a telephone call from the manager of the Home for Children with Disabilities. A nasty bug had swept through the Home and although they were over the worst and no longer contagious the children were feeling bored listless and unhappy.
“Would you have time to schedule an extra visit?” the manager had asked. “I know you’re busy but I think a visit from you would be just what the doctor ordered and give everyone a boost.”
“Of course!” the kind clown had replied immediately. “This very afternoon.”
Now the clown was trying to figure out what to bring along to cheer up the sick children. He’d take Tuki of course; the colorful parrot was always a great hit having finally been approved by the Home’s Health and Safety Officer. But he needed something else something new dramatic and exciting.
Suddenly Jolly Solly snapped his fingers.
“Got it!” he exclaimed. The clown had just received a new delivery of huffle puffles his famous lighter-than-air candies that started off as a tiny puff and then grew inside your mouth until they exploded with a loud pop! He would bring some to the Home. A quick call to the manager confirmed that all the children were allowed to eat them.
Delighted with his idea the clown got ready to leave. Soon he was sitting in his cheerful open-top car pulling out of Sunny Lane. He passed by Eli’s place on the way picked up Tuki in a cage and drove toward the Home.

The journey went smoothly until they hit the main road. A few minutes later they found themselves stuck in a huge traffic jam stretching for what looked like miles ahead. Nothing was moving. In fact the normally busy street looked more like a giant parking lot than a road. Jolly Solly wondered if there’d been some sort of accident up ahead.
Normally the clown would have shrugged and grinned and waited patiently. But now the thought of the unhappy children spurred him on. If only there was a way to bypass all the cars! For a moment the clown toyed with the idea of summoning a helicopter. But he discarded the idea immediately; there was nowhere for it to land. Then his eyes fell on Tuki. What if the bird could somehow deliver the huffle puffles to the waiting children? Aha! Jolly Solly’s eyes gleamed. (excerpted)
