Jr. Tales: Park ’n Fly
| March 15, 2017
"W hoever wants to come to the shopping center with me needs to be ready to leave in five minutes!” my mother called.
That’s my cue to quickly finish what I’m in middle of and race to the front door. Within three minutes I was wearing my coat and waiting for my mother at the door.
Yael my older sister joined me. “I should’ve known you’d be the first one here Yehuda. You love shopping more than any of my friends or me!” She grinned.
I smiled back. “Yup! Except that you girls probably like the shopping part better. I go for the parking lots. Watching all the cars at that shopping center we go to that’s just about my favorite pastime.”
She nodded. “I know that but I don’t think I’ll ever understand.”
I don’t expect anyone to understand. To me parking lots are interesting calming and exciting to visit. When my mother lets me spend time in a parking lot it’s a chance for me to be on my own for a bit without rushing to get anything done. I like seeing the cars lined up neatly row after row. I don’t know any other boys who are into stuff like this but for me driving around each individual block of cars searching for the empty spot where our car can slide in is an activity! I often look at the different cars and count how many I find of a certain one. I never get tired of parking lots because they’re never the same twice in a row.

“We’re here!” My mother’s voice broke into my thoughts. “Everybody out of the car!”
“Do I have to Mommy? Can’t I stay out here in the parking lot?”
“No Yehuda. It’s not safe. But you can stay near the doors of the store and watch the parking lot from there while we shop.”
I sighed. That would have to be good enough.
As soon as we entered the store I found a spot near the large glass doors. I wanted to watch cars entering the parking lot find the empty spots and guess which car would park in which spot. It was a new game and I wasn’t sure how well I’d be able to predict the results. The moving cars were very relaxing and I began to daydream while I watched.
Did you know you can daydream about something and concentrate on the actual thing at the same time? That’s what I did. As I watched the parking lot I started imagining what it would look like from a different angle.
What if I could look down at the parking lot from high above it? It would probably look like hundreds of toy cars moving on a black surface… That would be great! Since I’m not a bird though I could only imagine it. (excerpted)
