Jr. Tales: Shabbos Candy

mishpacha image

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Cohen

Yossi has a little extra homework to complete.

In class today everyone was asked to write a rough draft of an essay titled “The Importance of Shabbos.” Unfortunately I could not accept Yossi’s work and he’ll have to finish it at home. Sincerely

Rabbi Shaya Margolies Yeshivah Torah U’Mussar

The Importance of Shabbos

by Yossi Cohen

Shabbos is important because it’s the most special day of the week.

Shabbos is the best day for getting candy. I don’t have enough money to buy the candy I need. On Shabbos I get candy for free.

I like going to shul on Shabbos. Our shul has the best stuff — a candy man who gives out extra lollipops if you beg and a really good Kiddush.

Shabbos is my favorite day.

Rabbi Moskowitz

I’ve decided to resign as our shul’s candy man. I enjoy giving the kids’ treats but lately the job has been interfering with my davening.

I hope you’re able to find someone else to help. My locker number 407 has several bags of lollipops in it available for the kinderlach.

I look forward to attending your daf yomi shiur tomorrow.

Sincerely

Eliyahu Friedman

Thank you: To Yossi Cohen who graciously volunteered to serve as our shul’s candy man.

Upcoming shiurim: Pirkei Avos — Shabbos at 6:00 p.m.; Daily daf yomi shiur by Rabbi Moskowitz: 6:00 a.m. * Yossi opened locker #407 excited to find out what treasures it held. He took a quick inventory: ten bags of lollipops two bags of sucking candies one package of gum. Not too bad and definitely enough lollipops for Yossi to put aside a bag or two for himself.

Yossi’ calculations were interrupted by a sudden tug on his jacket. Surprised Yossi looked down. It was some little kid wanting a lollipop. Yossi smiled… his job had begun! (excerpted)
