So I love camp.
Don’t roll your eyes. I know everyone loves camp — who wouldn’t? But I think I love camp more.
Until this year.
This year was supposed to be my best year of camp. As Seniors we have our own division that combines all the other years of awesome multiplied by a thousand. Make that ten thousand. I’ve been counting down the days waiting for this summer for the last five years. The thing is if I’d known how miserable I would be I would’ve have been okay waiting just a little more.
So you want to hear about it? Hear how the summer that was supposed to be the best of my life turned into a total nightmare? So here goes. The story of my summer. The summer of walls. Seriously walls was the major theme of our summer.
The senior division had four bunks that year and on the second day of camp we were introduced to the most major competition of the summer. And when Mrs. D. our camp director jumped onto a stage during lunch on the second day of camp and splattered herself with paint while yelling “Paint! Paint! Paint! Paint! Every team will paint a wall!” I jumped onto my bench and began chanting with her.
When she announced that our division would be divided into two teams and each team will paint a mural on one of the hallway’s walls as a competition I joined my bunk in screaming “We’re gonna win for sure for sure!”
And by the time she announced the teams putting my bunk against Penina’s I was so excited to be involved in a competition I didn’t even realize I was competing against my best friend.
I also didn’t realize how unfairly the teams were divided.

Well I didn’t think the teams were unfair but lots of other girls did. Mostly girls on the other team who marched up to Mrs. D. and began complaining while the girls on my team huddled together and began planning our mural.
“Were going to make it out of this world” Chaya Sarah the most talented girl in Camp Zimrah said.
Well I guess that right there does make things a bit unfair but honestly there were lots of talented girls on the other team and they could have done an amazing job too. If they had chosen to try. Instead the girls on the other team decided they would do everything in their power to sabotage us. Horrible right?
Well when Mrs. D. cried out “We want your walls!” I know she had our stunning mural in mind.
But she got other walls too. Big thick walls of anger and jealousy and lashon hara. Walls heavy enough to tear apart best friends.
