Back to Front with Jolly Solly
| June 8, 2016
Hey Jrs.! Almost every week we read about the adventures of Jolly Solly and his Sunny Lane friends. This week we’re going to do a little Sunny Lane trivia and hear from Jolly Solly himself. And if you want to read more about one of your favorite characters check out R. Atkins’s new book Around the Year with Jolly Solly! Jr.: Do you remember all your stories? How do you avoid repeating a story when you write a new one each week? RA: Usually I do remember. After all the effort that goes into them the stories almost become a part of me. But just to be on the safe side before writing a seasonal story — for example about Shavuos — I check my Jolly Solly file on the computer to see what I’ve written for previous Shavuos issues to avoid repetition.
Jr.: How much in advance do you write each story? Is there any season when it’s harder to think of a topic than others? RA: That depends on the editor’s deadlines! On average I write the stories four to six weeks in advance. That means that in the Atkins household we were already in Shavuos mode six weeks ago (wouldn’t have minded some yummy cheesecake to go with it though!).
Jr.: Have the stories gotten easier to write over the years or harder? RA: Easier as I feel like the characters are part of my family by now! Also the feedback I get from readers helps me to know what they most enjoy.
