The Missing Coat
| April 19, 2016
“Ima can I go into the coat gemach downstairs?” I called to my mother as I opened the door leading to my basement. “I think I left my baseball bat down there.” “Okay Chaim but first call down and see if the people who were here left already ” my mother yelled above the din of my baby sister playing with the Pesach pots. “Hello? Anyone down there?” I asked stepping onto the stone stairs leading downstairs. There was no reply so I skipped the rest of the way down and tried not to let the dark basement scare me as I searched for my bat. I found my bat and began to maneuver my way through stacks of coats my mother donates to the poor of our community. The gemach is such a great mitzvah and some of the stuff she gives away is even top quality and really in style. Last week someone donated the coolest coat ever. It was bright red with thunderbolt zigzags on the sleeves and zippers all over. I could see that someone had taken the coat and it wasn’t in our basement anymore. To read the rest of this story please buy this issue of Mishpacha or sign up for a weekly subscription
