Jr. Tales: On Edge

"Grand Canyon here we come!” Head Counselor Michoel called out.

Excited cheers met his announcement.

The double-decker coach bus chugged along the scenic roads of Arizona most of the boys in Camp Regesh bouncing with enthusiasm as they got closer and closer to their destination. Only two were unusually quiet with knots of nerves twisting like a piece of licorice.

“We’re going to take a fantastic ride on mules for a few miles along the cliffs” Michoel told the boys. “And then we’ll go on the Skywalk that takes us above the canyon. The view is like nothing you’ve ever seen.”

“Nothing I’m planning to see either” Eliyahu muttered.

“You too?” Nesanel asked turning to his seatmate in surprise. “I was planning to ditch too. But I was sure I’d be the only one. Why don’t you want to go?”

“Promise you won’t tell?” Nesanel nodded and Eliyahu continued. “Heights are not my thing.”

“Mine either!” Nesanel agreed.

“So you’ll stay back with me?”

“You better believe it.”

A fist bump sealed their decision.

“What do you mean you’re not coming?” Michoel glared from one to the other.

“My ankle hurts” Eliyahu complained wincing as he massaged it.

“My knees are killing me.” Nesanel assumed a pained expression.

“Do you have any idea what you’re missing?” Michoel paused hoping to convince them to come along. “People travel from all over the world to see the Grand Canyon. And you’re going to throw away your chance?”

“Yup” the boys chorused limping back toward the entrance.
