The Sound I Like Best

Those two instruments playing together was a new sound at the time, totally fresh in Jewish music

There are some special moments in music where the innovation is especially clear. For me, one such moment is on Moshe Goldman’s “Tallis” song, the title track on his Kenesher album. Reb Moshe came up with a new idea and suggested to Moshe Laufer, the arranger, that he use the clarinet to play the melody and the regular sax for the low harmony — you can look it up in the interlude, at six minutes and fifteen seconds of the track. Those two instruments playing together was a new sound at the time, totally fresh in Jewish music, and was later imitated in other arrangements.
