The Lens: Another angle to the Rosh Yeshivah’s precision

Along with teaching Torah, he taught emes

There are many pictures paying tribute to the erlichkeit, the holiness and piety, of Rav Dovid Soloveitchik, the Brisker Rosh Yeshivah — images of Rav Dovid in the matzah bakery or selecting arba’ah minim. But to talmidim, this image tells a different story, highlighting another angle to the Rosh Yeshivah’s precision. The yeshivah had no fundraiser or office, as Rav Dovid — according to the tradition of his father — only accepted money that he knew came from “kosher” sources. He handled the money himself and paid chalukah, the monthly stipends, himself as well, seeing that as part of his responsibility; because along with teaching Torah, he taught emes, and this was one more means of imparting truth.
