So long as Torah is alive, the Jewish People will live, grow, and flourish

Happening in Amsterdam

Two weeks ago, throngs of Amsterdam’s community members turned out to welcome a new sefer Torah to the Khal Chassidim shul. Though a hachnassas sefer Torah is always a cause for celebration, this particular event had unique significance. The funding for the sefer Torah came by way of a grant, issued by the Dutch government as reparations for crimes committed during World War II. Khal Chassidim applied for funds and was awarded €50,000, which they immediately decided to use toward a new sefer Torah to be dedicated in memory of Dutch Jewry.

During his speech at the dinner following the joyous dancing, the rav, Rabbi Simcha Stanton, pointed out how Torah is a symbol of life — ki heim chayeinu v’orech yameinu. And although the sefer Torah was dedicated to those who have perished, it is also a testament to the endurance of those who have survived, and a promise that so long as Torah is alive, the Jewish People will live, grow, and flourish.
