Flowers and Greens

In my house, I never say, “Don’t play with your food,” because really, it’s so fun! Edible crafts are great for beating boredom, developing fine motor skills, and of course for celebrating special Yamim Tovim.

I have a quote hanging in my kitchen that says, “Excuse the mess, the children are busy building memories.” You may have to keep that in mind when working with the popcorn in the popcorn hydrangeas, but it’s worth it!

Have a beautiful Yom Tov!

Popcorn Hydrangeas

I always thought hydrangeas look like popcorn, so it’s no wonder that this idea popped into my head. These hydrangeas are guaranteed to remain fresh looking throughout Yom Tov, even without the water!

You will need:

  • popcorn (you can try colored as well!)
  • plastic wrap
  • twist ties
  • floral tape
  • plant stakes (available in craft stores)
  • artificial leaves (I used Ashland Bush Gerbe from Michaels)
  1. Cut a piece of plastic wrap approximately 12 inches long.
  2. Place a handful of popcorn in the center of the plastic wrap. Gather all the edges up and twist them tightly around the popcorn. Secure with a twist tie.
  3. Attach the popcorn to the plant stake using floral tape, stretching the tape as you wrap it around. Stick the leaves in various places along the stake as you wrap the tape around it.
Healthy Har Sinai

With the menfolk taking their well-deserved Shavuos morning naps, the day can get long for the mothers and children. Here’s an easy and healthy idea to help entertain the children, while preparing for the seudah at the same time.

You will need:

  • 1 bag shredded iceberg lettuce
  • assorted chopped green vegetables
  • hearts of palm
  • mustard (optional)
  1. Arrange the iceberg lettuce in the shape of a mountain on a large platter. Layer veggies on top.
  2. Place two hearts of palm above the “mountain” for the luchos.
  3. Decorate with mustard squiggles, if desired.
