Experience Needed; Please Call…

Gila Arnold

Hi Simi, it’s me. Racheli. What’s up? How was your navi test?…Simi, you did NOT fail. I’m on a bus right now, on my way to chesed. Oh, it’s all right, I guess, but nothing exciting? They don’t even speak a word of English, but they have a million dishes for me to wash. Yeah, they’re cute, but I kind of wish I had a exciting chesed. Did you hear what Soroh Leah she does? She dresses up as a clown and goes around the hospital to cheer up the children. Now THAT’s a real experience.

“What’s this?” Racheli exclaimed, as the woman smiled and left. “Simi, she just gave me — wait, let me read it — oh my gosh, she gave me a wedding invitation! You think she’s getting married?” She laughed. “Yeah, I assume it’s her grandchild. Maybe even great-grandchild. Anyway, how weird is that? I mean, to invite a total stranger to your simchah! ...When is it? Does it matter? … Oh, fine, if you really want to know, it’s … um, let’s see … tomorrow! Whoa, talk about last minute. How in the world can she arrange her seating if she’s still handing out invitations the day before? I’m telling you, people here are strange. … Well, if you want, I’ll bring it back to the dorm to show you guys. Maybe we can even hang it up, together with the funny posters Tzivia found in Meah Shearim. Oh my gosh, Simi, I just missed my stop!”
